Cross was born in Massachusetts. Completed four years of high school and was working as a general officer clerk when he enlisted in the Army on July 20, 1942 at New York City, New York. Served with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. Principal unit was Company K of the 86th Infantry Regiment. Wounded in action on February 25, 1945 near Mount della Torraccia, Italy.
